4. Moose

(Eland – Élan - Älg)

The moose is an interesting animal. Normally it looks very calm, but if it gets angry, it can be fast and dangerous. It is the biggest member of the deer family and is the only one with 'palm' antlers instead of 'twig' antlers. Bull Moose weigh between 350-850 kg and can be up to 2 m at the shoulders. The males (bulls) are in average 20% bigger than the females (cows) and are both taller and heavier. Cows weigh between 200-360 kg It is an animal with a rich history of being hunted, being protected and even being worshipped. A moose can run over 50 km/h for short distances and about 30 km/h for longer distances. They are also strong swimmers; they can swim about 20 km with an average speed of 9.5 km/h. It is estimated that there are 300 to 400 000 moose in Sweden in summer. About 100 000 of them are killed in autumn and the same number is born each spring. Hunting is regulated in that way that the numbers of moose stay stable. Moose are mostly solitary and do not live in herds. Tough they may occasionally feed in the same grounds; they tend to ignore each other. Cows follow the mother for one year, so mostly if you see moose together it’s mother and child(ren).
