5.  Red Fox

(Rode vos – Rödräv – Renard rouge)

The red fox is present across the northern hemisphere. The red fox can survive in many different habitats such as forest, grasslands, mountains, deserts and even in cities. Most have a stable home territory, but there are also foxes that travel without any fixed place. In some territories there are also other foxes living next to the dominant fox. These are usually yearlings (young foxes that are 1 year old). These foxes help to raise the pups. Normally, a fox prefers to live in the open field, but when the breeding season starts, it will search for, or make a den. These dens can be dug out of well drained ground on hills, mountain slopes, ravines and so on. A fox might even use old burrows from other animals.
Red foxes prefer rodents and rabbits, but they will also eat birds, amphibians, and fruit. Red foxes have excellent hearing. They can hear low-frequency sounds and rodents digging underground.
