The Arctic Circle passes through Northern America, Greenland, North Asia, the Scandinavian Peninsula, and the Arctic Ocean. Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, the United States (Alaska), Canada, Denmark (Greenland), and Iceland are the 8 countries containing land in the Arctic Circle. The position of the Arctic Circle is not fixed. Because the Earth is moving, it is changing two degrees over 40.000-year period. This ´fluctuation´ causes the Arctic Circle to slowly drift northwards for about 15 meter every year.
Humans began developing arctic land, being the first natives of the region. From then until the 15th century, this northern nation was mostly made up of hunters and gatherers with no centralization or hierarchy.
First wave of European colonization began. Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Russia started moving towards the north.
European expansion begins in the Americas. Gold and riches lured the British and French to explore. European traders exported furs to Europe.
Russian empire sells Alaska to America.
The Arctic Circle is home to about 4 million people along with various polar stations and meteorological centres, large and modern cities, large industrial enterprises, and sea and land transport routes.
Characteristics of the Arctic climate are long, cold winters with short days and short summers with long days. The more north you go, the longer dark short days in the winter and the lighter long days in summer you have. It can be as cold as -50°C in the winter and 30°C in the summer. In this region where our lodges are situated the sun does not rise above the horizon for two weeks in December and in the summer(end of May until beginning July) we have six weeks where the sun does not set.
