12. Berries

Berries up in the Arctic is full of vitamins and antioxidants. It is a result of the midnight sun and the fresh air.

Cloudberries

Cloudberries or also known as the golden berries are normally only found in the north of Sweden and in other countries with a similar climate, such as Norway, Finland and Russia. Even in the far north, they are quite fussy about where they grow as they need acidic soil on boggy ground. Provided the soil is right they are extremely hardy and can stand temperatures down to -40°C and still come back every summer. The orange/yellow berries are quite tart when eaten fresh, but when left to become overripe they have a creamy yoghurt-like texture and a sweet taste. They begin a red and white colour and when they become fully orange, they are ready to eat, it happens in July.

Blueberries

The blueberry is one of the most common plants in all of Sweden,   the blueberries thrive in spruce forests but can also grow up on mountain heaths. As well as being for eating, blueberries have traditionally  been used in Sweden to dye clothes and fabrics.
You can pick allot of them in end of July and the whole august.

 Lingonberries

The lingonberry is the small red berry that grows all over the forests in Sweden, not just the north. It is the berry in Sweden that is picked in the biggest quantity each year. Most often it is turned into jam, this way the slightly bitter taste of it is replaced with a sweeter flavour. This jam is eaten not as a sweet food by itself so much, but more to accompany meats like reindeer and moose. In middle of September we pick them to make lemonade. Then the first frost has made them more sweet.
